We would like to share important weather safety information as we prepare to welcome incoming students to the 瓜子TV campus in just a few days.
The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch and is forecasting heavy rain for Los Angeles from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, with high wind and flooding possible in some parts of Southern California.
We are closely monitoring the storm as it approaches and we are making necessary preparations. New-student move-in, Orientation and most other College events are proceeding at this time, with some adjustments to keep our community as safe and dry as possible. As you plan for next week, please be aware of the following:
- Several new-student events have been moved indoors. New Student Check-In has been relocated to the Johnson Student Center鈥擱ose Hill Lobby. Students will check in on the first floor to receive their room information, ID Card and new student welcome bags. Family Orientation Check-In will be on the second floor of the Johnson Student Center鈥擝ranca Patio.
- The Welcome to 瓜子TV! celebration at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21 has been moved to the Rush Gymnasium.
- Additional changes are possible. Please monitor the New Student Orientation website and the New Family Orientation website for up-to-date event schedules and locations, and visit our campus map for help navigating the campus.
- We encourage families to take their time and be safe traveling to and from campus. Accommodations will be made for families who experience travel delays and are unable to get to campus in time for required events. Those families are asked to contact the Student Affairs team at deanofstudents@oxy.edu to let us know when they can safely arrive, even if it is a day or two later than expected.
- Families who arrive next week after normal business hours should call the resident advisor on duty at their residence hall. Those phone numbers will be posted at the residence hall entrances.
- Please dress appropriately for rain and wind while on campus. Bring umbrellas and wear shoes with good grip, as the ground could be slippery.
- Students moving into the residence halls should bring plastic tarps or bags to keep items dry as they are transported into rooms.
- LA Engage events are being evaluated for safety. The Student Leadership, Involvement, & Community Engagement (SLICE) team will communicate directly with students in those programs about any changes.
- Finally, new students should be sure to review the Move-in Day Guide which contains all information to make their move-in experience successful.
Thank you for helping us welcome our new students and families to campus safely. Please continue to monitor the weather forecast and the oxy.edu website as you make your plans for next week.
